Cécile Kyenge, former Italian Minister for Integration, was a Member of the European Parliament from 2014-2019. As MEP, and a member the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and of the Committee on Development (DEVE). She was also Vice-President of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly ACP-EU and member of the delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament and co-President of the European Parliament “Anti- Racism and Diversity Intergroup” (ARDI).
In March 2020 she returned to Italy as a volunteer doctor to support her country in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. She works in the Special Units for surveillance, sidetracking and assistance of patients in Northern Italy. Meanwhile, she has been granted a teaching position at the University of Pennsylvania, where she hopes to start as soon as the pandemic is over.
